Ian Gillberg | Busking in Santa Cruz

I created a series of short, personal documentaries about creative people I encountered around the Santa Cruz community. This piece grew out of a chance encounter with Ian, a local busker I met downtown. I was drawn to his personality and the story he had to tell, so I went home, put the piece together, and finished it that same night. The project was an exercise in finding a story in an unexpected place and responding quickly with the tools at hand. I wanted the visual treatment to complement Ian’s storytelling rather than overpower it, pairing his candid, personal perspective with the textures and atmosphere of the streets around him. It’s a small, spontaneous project, but it reflects something I value in documentary storytelling: paying attention, recognizing a compelling character, and finding the visual language that allows their story to carry the piece.
